Production process of BioNatal black seed oil

93% of companies worldwide purchase black seed oil in the Far East and Middle East, as well as in Africa. The oil is then bottled into their own brand's containers and sold on the local market.

BioNatal produces the oil itself, sourcing it directly from farmers in Ethiopia's finest region. BioNatal independently manages all processes—from start to finish.

Most companies in the black seed oil market operate out of an office somewhere in the world.

We, on the other hand, work directly with local farmers in the region of Ethiopia where the world's finest Nigella sativa seeds are grown.

BioNatal employees regularly visit Nigella sativa flower farms in Ethiopia. This enables us to check and control the quality of the seed deliveries for oil production.
We know exactly what quality the harvest is and how many seeds are harvested.

After harvest, the seed for BioNatal is immediately sent to the packaging and sorting station.

We try to clean the seed immediately after harvest so that we do not have to store it. This allows us to reuse the seeds directly.

Many companies do not clean the seeds because they filter the oil before sale and therefore do not consider cleaning necessary.

After harvest, the purity level of Nigella sativa seeds is about 80%. There are various cleaning methods, but most oil manufacturers opt for the cheapest and fastest option.

BioNatal cleans the seeds in two passes using Sortex, the most expensive and best method. By cleaning the seeds twice with Sortex, we achieve a purity level of 99%.
This fact is confirmed by certificates from the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture for every seed shipment. You can see this on the BioNatal Analysis and Certificates page in the phytosanitary certificate.

After cleaning the Nigella sativa seeds with Sortex, BioNatal prepares them for shipping at certified sorting facilities.

All facilities that the seeds pass through have all the necessary licenses and strict sanitary controls.

While the seeds await the export process, they are stored in a special room at the required temperature at the sorting station.

BioNatal staff constantly monitor the ambient temperature and ensure that the best storage conditions for the seeds are maintained.

Before export, we double-check the Nigella sativa seeds for potential contaminants. We use an independent laboratory in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The loading of the seeds into the shipping container is supervised by representatives from BioNatal and the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture.

BioNatal Black Seed Oil is produced in the company's facilities in the United States and Germany. In the United States, the Nigella sativa seeds are shipped from the ports in Houston to the BioNatal facility in Edinburg, Texas.

Before the black cumin seeds leave the container at the port, they are carefully inspected by the local health and quarantine authorities.

After inspection, our Ethiopian seeds must obtain FDA approval for use in the United States.

All Nigella sativa seeds are stored in a special BioNatal storage room under constant temperature and humidity control.

The air temperature and humidity data are recorded every minute by a special automatic device and automatically adjusted if necessary.

The oil is pressed in a plant specifically designed for processing hard and small seeds. The equipment does not heat the oil during the friction process. During processing in the BioNatal plants, the oil does not exceed 36°C, while the global standard for cold-pressed oil is a maximum of 46°C.

In all African countries, as well as in the Far and Middle East, industrial plants are used that were mainly manufactured in the 1980s and 1990s. These machines are actually designed for producing oil from soft materials and seeds. It should not be forgotten that the black seed oil industry is very young and is not under the control of the official government and economic structures of the various countries. Many black seed oil producers are small businesses. They usually buy pressing equipment on the local market that is intended for the production of soft oil such as olive and sunflower oil.

Industrial equipment increases the temperature very significantly when processing hard seeds such as Nigella Sativa. This is one of the negative factors that affects the quality of black seed oil production in Africa and the Middle East. Normally, such plants increase the oil release temperature to 93°C. However, there is another negative factor during the production process.

Oil production in the BioNatal factories lasts no longer than 3 hours per day. These operating times are set so that oil extraction is definitely completed before the equipment heats up and becomes too hot. This allows us to start work when the oil reaches a temperature of 25°C, and finish it at 36°C. The temperature is measured hourly at all pressing machines. BioNatal has a complete temperature report for all 18 liters of oil. This differs greatly from the processes of the other mass manufacturers of black seed oil.

Mass manufacturers use the equipment around the clock to produce large quantities of oil. Industrial equipment burns oil after the first hours of operation, yet manufacturers in the Middle East and Africa proceed in this way, because they have large orders from Russia, Europe, and the United States. For them, speed is money.

Therefore, the oil manufacturers also have no documents with records of the temperatures during operation. BioNatal is ready to provide any customer with documents showing the history of the purchased bottle of black seed oil. Furthermore, almost all oil producers in the world cannot officially confirm their cold-pressing method. However, it is possible, and BioNatal does it. You can read more about this on the BioNatal page 'Analyses and Certificates'.

BioNatal stores the oil in 18-liter glass bottles. This is a major difference between our company and all other companies in the world. We store the oil in glass bottles at the required temperature and humidity.

All companies that do not produce black seed oil import it from Africa and the Middle East. This oil is transported in plastic drums or plastic containers. The oil is stored in customs terminals at airports or in shipping containers on ships without temperature control.

This is very detrimental to the quality of the oil, as black seed oil has a pH of 3 to 4, causing the plastic to react with the oil.

BioNatal stores the oil for 30 days so that the powdered seeds (sediment) can settle at the bottom. This sediment is then added to every bottle of BioNatal Black Seed Oil, ensuring that our customers receive 100% of the beneficial properties of Nigella sativa seeds. Filtering the oil, as is often done in the production processes of other companies, frequently results in the loss of many important compounds.

Another special feature of BioNatal: We produce as many 18-liter jars each week as we sell in a week. Therefore, there is only as much oil with sediment on our shelves as we will sell in about a month. We try to produce the oil only when it is needed. This means that the BioNatal oil is always fresh!

Imagine the situation with conventional black seed oil brands. The companies buy the oil, bring it into their country in plastic containers, and bottle it before sale. This process takes almost half a year. The buyers of the last oil bottles of the shipping batch buy a product that is one or two years old. For this reason, many brands do not state a production date on their labels. And if the oil is in a plastic bottle, this oil will surely be contaminated with the dangerous substances of the plastic.

Time for bottling. We bottle exactly as much oil as we sell in one week. Every Monday, the BioNatal oil is bottled. Within one week, it is then shipped to all our customers.

As for the oils of other brands, the imported oils are usually bottled on a single day and then stored in the warehouse until they are sold or placed on store shelves.

As already mentioned, using a special machine, we add 5% powdered seeds to each bottle. Many of our customers prefer a very strong black seed oil. Therefore, the oil becomes richer and stronger with the seeds. Anyone who wants the strongest black seed oil and tries BioNatal oil will be convinced by the products.
